A Call to Action for Affordable Housing in Austin

A Call to Action for Affordable Housing in Austin

Source: Emily Chenevert – CEO, Austin Board of REALTORS

It’s no secret that Austin has been booming over the past twenty years, becoming one of the most successful places for businesses to grow. Texas, in general, is known as a great state for business, and Austin has been leading the pack. Plus, three of the fastest-growing cities in the country are right here in Central Texas. But there’s a big problem: housing.

Austin needs more homes, especially for people with lower or middle incomes. Our city doesn’t have enough affordable homes for everyone who wants to live here. Last year, a report from the Austin Board of Realtors showed just how serious this problem is.

The report found that for families earning 80% or less of the average income, there’s a 50% shortage of affordable homes in Austin. That means there are over 200,000 homes missing! Simply put, too many people want to live in Austin, and there aren’t enough homes for them. This leads to people being forced out of the city and struggling to find a place to live.

We need to fix this housing shortage, especially because it’s hitting our teachers, firefighters, recent graduates, and many others hard. These are the people who make Austin a great place to live, and they deserve homes they can afford.

The numbers show us that we need to take action. Last year, the Austin City Council started working on this issue. They made some important decisions to make it easier to build homes in Austin and to make them more affordable. But we need to keep going.

This May, the City Council will talk about more changes to the rules for building homes in Austin. These changes could help make more homes all across the city, offer different kinds of homes, and make it easier to live close to public transportation. It’s really important for the Council to agree on these changes because they’re the first step in making sure everyone can find a home they can afford in Austin.

We have to work together on this. Only by taking action as a community can we fix the problems that have been building up for years. Let’s come together to make sure Austin is a place where everyone can find a home they love.

We’re committed to solving Austin’s housing crisis and making sure there are enough homes for everyone. We’re asking you to talk to your city council members and support changes that will create more housing options all over Austin. Let’s work together to make sure everyone in our city can thrive.
