Austin No Longer in Top 10 U.S. Cities by Population

Shortly after Austin claimed the title of the 10th largest city in the United States by population, its position has shifted. Recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau indicates that Austin's population in 2023 stood at 979,882, a mere 0.5% increase from the previous year, relegating it to the 11th spot. This places Austin behind Jacksonville, Florida, with an estimated population of 985,843.

While growth in Austin's suburbs remains robust, the region no longer boasts three of the nation's fastest-growing cities. The latest data, covering the period from July 2022 to July 2023, reveals shifts in migration patterns. Travis County, which closely mirrors Austin's boundaries, experienced a net outflow of residents, contrasting with gains seen in the surrounding counties.

Nevertheless, the Austin metro area is far from stagnant. Several suburbs with populations exceeding 5,000 witnessed substantial growth, including Dripping Springs (23.3%), Liberty Hill (14.9%), Georgetown (10.6%), Kyle (9%), and Leander (7.6%). Although a few localities experienced population declines, such as Bee Cave (-2.7%), the overall trend underscores the region's vitality.

Georgetown, previously lauded as one of the fastest-growing cities by percentage increase, slipped to eighth place in this ranking, while Kyle dropped from third to eleventh. This shift reflects the rapid growth witnessed in other cities across the country, including Celina, Fulshear, and Princeton in Texas.

Houston, San Antonio, and Dallas maintain their positions among the most populous U.S. cities, with Houston ranking fourth (2,314,157), San Antonio seventh (1,495,295), and Dallas ninth (1,302,868). Notably, Austin still surpasses Fort Worth, which holds the twelfth spot (978,468).

These trends highlight Austin's ongoing struggle to sustain its growth. Some attribute this challenge to zoning regulations that hinder urban development, exacerbating housing affordability concerns and driving residents towards suburban areas. Nonetheless, recent efforts have aimed to accommodate growth by incentivizing development outside the city limits, where land is more affordable and local governments are perceived as business-friendly.

Key projects like Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.'s factory in Taylor, Tesla Inc.'s facility in eastern Travis County, and the dual-site of Space Exploration Technologies Corp. and The Boring Co. in Bastrop County signal a shift towards suburban expansion.
