Austin Earns a Spot Among the Best U.S. Cities for Gen Z

Austin Among Top U.S. Cities for Gen Z in 2025, Study Finds
Austin continues to prove itself as one of the most attractive places for Gen Z to call home, according to a recent survey by CommercialCafe.
The study, titled “Best Cities for Gen Z in 2025 & Beyond: Which Areas Are Most Livable for Young People?”, evaluated nine key factors across major U.S. cities with populations exceeding 400,000. These factors included cost of living, employment opportunities requiring a college degree, the percentage of residents aged 20–24, and the variety of available recreational activities, among others.
Based on these metrics, Austin ranked 8th nationwide and 4th in the South as one of the best cities for Gen Z. Minneapolis, Minnesota, earned the top spot overall.
CommercialCafe highlighted Austin as a major hub for young adults, describing it as a city synonymous with youth culture in Texas and across the southern U.S. About 7.5% of Austin’s population—roughly 74,495 residents—fall within the 20-to-24 age range. While the study primarily focused on young adults in their early twenties, Gen Z as a whole includes individuals born between 1997 and 2012.
The report also pointed out that Austin has a strong startup ecosystem, many of which are fueled by Gen Z entrepreneurs. The city ranked 6th nationwide in the “jobs for graduates” category. Additionally, Austin boasts one of the lowest unemployment rates on the list at 4.3%, affordable internet costs, more than 3,200 recreational venues, and an abundance of parks—making it an appealing destination for those seeking both work and lifestyle balance.
CommercialCafe noted that Gen Zers are increasingly moving to Austin, with the city ranking 20th for Gen Z migration in 2023. The study described Gen Z as a “valuable asset for businesses and communities,” citing their digital fluency, financial awareness, and community-minded approach.
“While often labeled as the most-criticized generation, Gen Zers are proving to be financially responsible, socially engaged, and highly adaptable,” the report stated. “Their digital-native background positions them to excel in emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence.”
Several other Texas cities also made the national list: Houston (9th), San Antonio (11th), Fort Worth (20th), El Paso (26th), and Dallas (27th).
