Austin Named America’s Best College Town for 2027
Choosing where to attend college means choosing a place to live, work, and build a community. According to WalletHub’s latest rankings, Austin offers the strongest overall combination of those opportunities.
The Texas capital earned the No. 1 spot in WalletHub’s ranking of the best college towns and cities for 2027. Ann Arbor, Michigan, finished second, followed by Charlottesville, Virginia; Raleigh, North Carolina; and Atlanta, Georgia.
The study compared 415 U.S. cities across 31 measures, grouped into three categories: affordability, social environment, and academic and economic opportunities. Factors included living costs, higher-education quality, crime rates, employment prospects, and recreation.
What Helped Austin Take First Place?
Austin’s appeal starts with its educational options. The city is home to the University of Texas at Austin, Huston-Tillotson University, St. Edward’s University, and Concordia University. WalletHub placed Austin 22nd for the quality of higher education among the cities studied.
Employment opportunities also contributed to its strong showing. The report highlighted Austin’s low unemployment and ranked the city 34th for annual job growth. For students, those conditions can matter both when looking for work during school and when planning what comes after graduation.
Outside the classroom, WalletHub pointed to Austin’s attractions, sports clubs, shopping options, and college athletics as features that add to the student experience.
A Top Ranking Still Comes With Cost Considerations
Austin’s first-place finish does not mean it leads every category. The city ranked 188th for affordability, described in the study as “wallet friendliness.”
That distinction matters for students and families weighing their options. A city can offer strong educational and career opportunities while still requiring careful budgeting for housing, transportation, and everyday expenses.
What the Ranking Means for Future Students
Austin’s result highlights the value of looking beyond a campus when choosing a college. The surrounding city can shape everything from a student’s social life to their access to work.
For prospective students, the ranking offers a useful starting point. The next step is comparing individual schools, financial aid packages, housing options, and programs to find the right personal fit.
